IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.

Write a letter to the company. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing in response to your request for public feedback regarding how your company should spend its money, either by sponsoring a local children's sports team for two years or by funding two open-air concerts. Sponsoring the children's sports team would bring several benefits to the local community. Firstly, it would encourage children to participate in physical activities, helping them to maintain a healthy lifestyle and develop important skills such as teamwork, leadership and, importantly, discipline. This would also encourage children to participate more, even if they are worried about the admission fee.

On the other hand, organizing two open-air concerts would also have a positive impact. Such an event would provide entertainment for people of all ages and bring community members together.

Although both options have their advantages, I strongly believe that sponsoring the children's sports team would be the better investment. Unlike concerts, which provide temporary entertainment, supporting a sports team for two years would create long-term benefits.

Thank you for considering my opinion. I hope your company makes a decision that will have a lasting positive impact on the local community

Yours faithfully,

Gaurav singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points and make your recommendation clear: you favour sponsoring the team because its benefits would last longer than the concerts’ entertainment. The sports-team benefits are the most developed, with examples including healthy lifestyles, teamwork, leadership and discipline. The concerts are covered more briefly, however, with only entertainment and bringing people together mentioned; adding a specific benefit such as supporting local performers or attracting visitors would make this part more complete. The claim about children being worried about an admission fee is also unclear: explain what fee you mean and how sponsorship would reduce it. Your position is clear, but fuller support for the less-developed points would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the request, considers the sports team, contrasts the concerts, and then gives a recommendation and closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish the main stages, and linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” and “Although both options” guide the reader effectively. The contrast between temporary entertainment and two years of support also gives the argument a logical conclusion. Some connections could be made more precise: “This would also encourage children to participate more” has an unclear reference, and the admission-fee point is not fully linked to the sponsorship. Clarifying these links would make cohesion more consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal community letter, including “sponsoring,” “physical activities,” “healthy lifestyle,” “positive impact,” and “long-term benefits.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and phrases such as “lasting positive impact” fit the purpose well. There is some flexibility in describing the two options, though a few expressions are broad or imprecise: “participate more” does not specify what children would participate in, while “admission fee” is not clearly explained in context. More precise wording for the concerts’ community and economic benefits would also help develop the comparison. Check capitalization in the signature: “Gaurav Singh.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You show a good range of structures, including the opening sentence with an embedded choice, the conditional-style participle phrase “helping them to maintain,” and the contrast in “Unlike concerts, which provide temporary entertainment…”. Most sentences are controlled and easy to follow, with accurate agreement and tense use. Punctuation is generally effective, including the commas around “importantly.” A few details need attention: the final sentence lacks a full stop, and the closing/signature formatting would be clearer with consistent punctuation. The phrase “even if they are worried about the admission fee” is grammatically formed, but its relationship to the preceding idea is unclear; revising the sentence structure to make that connection explicit would improve precision.
