IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, people are now living longer than ever before. Some people say an aging population creates problems for governments. Other people think there are benefits if society has more elderly people.

To what extent do the advantages of having an aging population outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

In many parts of the world, life expectancy is increasing, resulting in a growing proportion of elderly people. Although an ageing population can bring certain benefits, i believe its disadvantage clearly outweigh its advantages because of the financial burden it places on government and the challenges it creates in the labour market.

Admittedly, having more elderly people can benefit society to some extent. Older individuals usually possess valuable professional and life experience, which can be passed on to younger generations. Their advice and guidance may help young people make better decisions regarding their education, careers and personal lives. As a result, younger people may avoid unnecessary mistakes and become more mature and responsible.

However, one major reason why an ageing population creates serious problems is that it contributes significantly to government expenditure. As the number of elderly citizens rises, there is greater demand for pensions, healthcare and social care services. Governments therefore have to allocate more public resources to supporting older people, which places increasing financial pressure on public budgets and taxpayers.

Another significant drawback is the shrinking labour force. As a large proportion of the population reaches retirement age, the number of working-age people gradually declines. This can lead to labour shortage in certain industries and make it more difficult for employers to recruit suitable staff. In the long term, slower economic growth and reduced tax revenues may further exacerbate the financial challenges caused by an ageing population.

In conclusion, despite the benefits associated with the wisdom and experience of older people, i believe the disadvantages of an ageing society clearly outweigh its advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The arguments regarding financial burden and labour shortages are relevant and well-supported with logical explanations. The counter-argument regarding the benefits of elderly wisdom is acknowledged and addressed, fulfilling the requirement to discuss both sides before concluding. The ideas are extended sufficiently to meet the task requirements, and the conclusion effectively summarises the writer's stance. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific real-world examples or data to further substantiate the claims made about government expenditure and economic growth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks is handled smoothly using cohesive devices such as 'Admittedly' and 'However'. The use of referencing and substitution is generally effective, ensuring the text flows well. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The cohesive devices are used with flexibility, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive usage. The structure is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary used is appropriate for the task and demonstrates a sufficient range for flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'growing proportion', 'financial burden', 'public resources', and 'exacerbate the financial challenges' show a good command of topic-specific language. There is an awareness of style and collocation, and the vocabulary is used naturally to convey complex ideas. While the range is sufficient, the essay could benefit from a few more sophisticated or less common lexical items to push into the higher band range. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay demonstrates a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like constructions ('As the number of elderly citizens rises, there is...') and relative clauses. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control over grammar and punctuation is generally strong. There are minor slips, such as the failure to capitalise the personal pronoun 'i' in the introduction and conclusion, and a missing plural marker in 'its disadvantage clearly outweigh' (should be 'disadvantages' and 'outweigh'). Despite these rare slips, the grammatical control is consistent, and the errors do not interfere with the clarity of the message.
