Student answer (Band 7.5)

During the last few decades, numerous health discoveries led to a great number of revolutions in the medical field. With a growing and better understanding of the human body and the diseases that could affect him, humans' life expectancy soared. While some argue that this tendency toward the aging of populations is of negative impacts on governements. Others believe that this could represent a source of several opportunities.

As far as I am concerned, I truly believe that the benefits of an increased population of elders in societies clearly outweigh its downsides.

First of all, it is undeniable that the aging of populations could have some undesireable impacts opon governments. As a matter of fact, an aging of the overall population translates in the decrease of younger generations percentages. Such tendancy could lead to a number of problems. From which there is the decrease in the numbers of the county workforce. Moreover, an increase in the average populations' age could lead to an increase in health expenses. Hence, intesifieing the funding crises.

However, considering only this perspective may overlook other important factors and lead to an incomplete understanding of the broader issue. In fact, having an increased number of elders could lead to numerous advantages. For instance, older people could be a great source of inspiration and learning to future generations. When their knowledge and life experience are shared with younger people, they can provide valuable guidance and help them make wiser decisions. As a result, society can benefit from more responsible citizens and stronger communities.

To conclude, even though at first glance having a growing number of older people seems to have some downsides, these prove to be negligible compared with the benefits they bring. Therefore, societies should view an ageing population not as a burden but as an opportunity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You successfully identify both the challenges (workforce and healthcare costs) and the benefits (knowledge transfer and community strength). The ideas are relevant and logically extended. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are more specific; for instance, instead of general statements about 'knowledge and life experience,' you could briefly mention how older generations contribute to mentorship programs or volunteer work. Overall, the development is sufficient and the position is well-maintained.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'First of all,' 'Moreover,' 'Hence,' and 'To conclude' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the opposing viewpoints. The progression of ideas is smooth, and referencing is generally clear. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences within paragraphs is slightly more varied, as some of the linking phrases are quite standard. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'life expectancy,' 'workforce,' and 'funding crises.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'undesireable impacts opon' (undesirable impacts upon) and 'intesifieing' (intensifying). While these do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Incorporating more sophisticated, less common lexical items would enhance your score. Focus on using collocations more naturally to improve the overall flow and precision of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'tendency toward the aging of populations is of negative impacts on governements' (which is grammatically awkward) and 'decrease in the numbers of the county workforce' (should be 'country'). Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'undesireable' and 'intesifieing.' While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, and proofread carefully to eliminate minor spelling slips.
