Student answer (Band 7.5)
In many countries, people are living longer due to improved healthcare and better living standards. While some argue that an aging population places a burden on governments, others believe it brings several benefits to society. In my opinion, although there are certain challenges, the advantages of having more elderly people largely outweigh the disadvantages.
On the one hand, an aging population can create economic and social pressures. Governments may face increased expenditure on healthcare services and pensions, which can strain public finances. In addition, a larger elderly population may lead to a smaller workforce, reducing productivity and economic growth. For example, countries like Japan are already experiencing labor shortages due to their aging populations, forcing them to rethink workforce policies and immigration rules.
On the other hand, there are significant benefits to having more elderly individuals in society. Older people often possess valuable knowledge, skills, and life experience that can contribute positively to communities. Many retirees engage in part-time work, volunteering, or mentoring younger generations, which helps maintain social cohesion. Furthermore, the growing demand for healthcare and senior services can create new job opportunities and boost certain sectors of the economy.
In conclusion, although an aging population can present challenges such as increased financial pressure and a shrinking workforce, the benefits, including the contribution of experience and new economic opportunities, are more substantial. Therefore, I believe that with proper planning and policies, the advantages of an aging society outweigh its disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding economic pressure and social benefits are relevant and well-supported with a specific example (Japan). However, the response falls short of the 250-word minimum requirement, which is a significant constraint. While the ideas are well-developed, the brevity limits the depth of the analysis, preventing a higher score. To improve, you should expand on your supporting points with more detailed explanations or additional examples to ensure the word count is comfortably met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand,' 'In addition,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the relationship between ideas is clear. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between your arguments is even more seamless and that you avoid any minor repetition in sentence structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task, such as 'expenditure,' 'social cohesion,' 'productivity,' and 'substantial.' The word choices are generally precise and contribute to a formal tone. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede meaning. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items or idiomatic collocations related to the topic of demographics and economics to show greater flexibility and precision in your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your use of subordinate clauses (e.g., 'While some argue that...', 'although there are certain challenges...') is accurate and enhances the flow of the text. The grammar is largely error-free, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. The sentences are clear and easy to read. To move into the higher bands, aim to include a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or conditional sentences, while maintaining the high level of accuracy you have already achieved.
