Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the problems and benefits of an aging population and provides a clear position. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation of the disadvantages focuses primarily on government spending, while the advantages section relies heavily on a single personal anecdote about a grandfather. To achieve a higher band, you should broaden your arguments to include societal or economic perspectives beyond personal experience. The conclusion is brief and does not fully synthesize the points raised. The response meets the minimum length requirement, but the depth of analysis needs improvement to fully explore the complexities of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. While cohesive devices like 'However' and 'For instance' are used, they are occasionally applied mechanically. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the use of 'they' when referring to the grandfather, which creates ambiguity. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the discussion of disadvantages and advantages could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun reference would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'wiseful advise' (wise advice) and 'lions proportion' (lion's share). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic terms like 'problems' and 'benefits' repeatedly. To improve, you should focus on using more sophisticated collocations and academic vocabulary. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of precision and the presence of spelling or word-choice errors occasionally distract the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of the writing. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('governments faces', 'ageing people rises'), incorrect verb forms ('he face some issues'), and punctuation errors. While the meaning is usually understandable, these persistent errors demonstrate a lack of control over complex structures. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that verb tenses are used consistently throughout your paragraphs.
