Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of an aging population, and the writer takes a clear position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. However, the development of ideas is limited, repetitive, and restricted solely to the role of older people as history tutors. Furthermore, the response is severely under-length, containing only 191 words against the required 250-word minimum. This results in a failure to fully extend and support arguments as required by higher band descriptors. According to the criteria, the response addresses the task partially and contains under-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay displays some overall organization, attempting to introduce the topic and provide supporting examples. However, there is no clear overall progression or standard paragraph structure, with sentences trailing off and ideas poorly linked. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or inaccurate, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters and improper transitional phrases like 'For instant' and 'Another benefit, where students are...'. Paragraphing is visibly inadequate and messy, which hampers the logical flow of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently impeded by severe word choice and collocation errors. Examples include phrases like 'older citizens is often debated', 'aged people generate problems', 'more grants in the past history', and 'old citeand'. Spelling errors and incorrect word forms, such as 'information' pluralized as 'informations', significantly strain the reader's comprehension. The lexical range is limited and inadequate for an academic task, corresponding to a Band 4 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The writing exhibits a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent, pervasive grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('since them have live'), incorrect verb tenses ('events that has ready occurs'), and sentence fragments ('and also they can acts guidance for children'). Punctuation and capitalization are also poorly controlled, with missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences and after periods. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader.
