Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address both the advantages and disadvantages of an aging population, mentioning potential job creation and reduced educational costs, alongside economic and social drawbacks. However, the response is cut short abruptly in the conclusion and crucially fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, stopping at only 198 words. Because of this significant under-length issue and limited development of ideas, the response falls under Band 5 according to the task response descriptors, where ideas remain underdeveloped and the task is only partially addressed due to the premature ending.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays an attempt at logical organisation with paragraph breaks, transitional phrases like 'To begin with the first advantage' and 'Looking in the other site', and clear signposting of points. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the paragraphing breaks down entirely towards the end with fragmented sentences and an unfinished conclusion. While there is a basic structural framework, the lack of a proper conclusion and frequent disjointed transitions prevent the writing from achieving a higher score. Overall, the organisation fits the criteria for Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited, repetitive vocabulary with several noticeable word choice and spelling errors, such as 'chaumage' (unemployment/job creation), 'massagers' (masseurs), 'economics problems' (economic problems), and 'relegion' (religion). While the writer attempts less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in collocation and word formation cause some difficulty for the reader and occasionally impede communication. Vocabulary is restricted to basic terms, fitting the descriptor for Band 5, where the lexical resource is minimally adequate for the task but marred by frequent lexical inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
There is a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, such as 'Because of the number of older people increases,so the number of teenagers, children, etc decreases simultaneously.' Punctuation and spacing errors are widespread, including missing spaces after commas and periods. Grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text, involving subject-verb agreement, prepositions, and word forms. These errors cause noticeable strain and difficulty for the reader. The control of grammar aligns best with Band 4, as errors are very frequent and occasionally distort the intended meaning.
