Student answer (Band 6.0)

According to some individuals, elderly people are beneficial for the nation. However, other people think that the government may experience difficulties as aging population grows. In my prespective, the growing proportion of elderly people has more advantages than challenges.

First of all, elderly people can benefit society because they posses valuable experience and knowledge that can be passed onto younger generations. For instance, When young people faces dfferent challenges in life, grandparents provide them some essential knowledge to tackle those hurdles. For this reason, elderly people creates major impact on the society.

Additionally, older people often provide emotional support. They can give encouragement and stability within families. For example, when young adults experience difficulties such as losing a job or failing an important exam, their elderly family members can offer reassurance and share their own experiences of overcoming hardships. This can help younger people regain confidence and cope with stressful situations.

Moreover, they can pass cultural values, customs, and traditions to younger people. For instance, grandparents can teach younger family members traditional customs, religious celebrations, and local recipes, helping them maintain their cultural heritage and pass these traditions on to future generations. Therefore, increasing population of older people play an essential role in the society instead of creating hurdles.

In conclusion, although an ageing population can create certain challenges, elderly people often make valuable contributions to society by providing emotional support, sharing their experience, and preserving cultural traditions for upcoming generations. Therefore, their role in society should be recognized and valued.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, arguing that the advantages of an aging population outweigh the disadvantages. The main body paragraphs explore valid points such as the transfer of experience, emotional support, and the preservation of cultural traditions. Ideas are generally extended and supported with relevant examples, such as grandparents helping young adults navigate exams or job losses. However, the development tends to be somewhat repetitive, focusing heavily on interpersonal and familial benefits rather than broader societal or economic implications. Despite this minor tendency towards generalization, the requirements of the prompt are satisfactorily fulfilled, aligning well with a Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organization with an introduction, well-defined body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all,' 'Additionally,' 'Moreover,' and 'In conclusion' are used to sequence ideas and guide the reader smoothly through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main body paragraph focusing on a distinct benefit of an aging population. Although referencing is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical and the overall progression relies on a predictable formula. Nevertheless, the coherent overall arrangement and logical flow easily satisfy the criteria for a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'proportion,' 'reassurance,' 'cultural heritage,' and 'preservinng.' There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though a few minor lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors occur, such as 'prespective' instead of 'perspective,' 'posces' instead of 'possesses,' and 'ageing' versus 'aging' (though both spellings are acceptable, consistency is preferable). Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is precise enough to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication. This performance fits comfortably within the Band 6.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional-style structures and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues present throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement slips ('When young people faces', 'elderly people creates'), missing plural markers, and a capitalization error ('When' mid-sentence). However, these errors are non-systematic and rarely impede communication. The writer maintains adequate control over basic structures while attempting more complex formations. These characteristics are representative of a Band 6.0 performance.
