Student answer (Band 6.5)

At present, people are living longer than they previously did and it is happening in many countries. Many people claim that the increasing number of aging population poses problems for governments, while others argue that it is beneficial for society to have more elderly people. I believe the advantages of aging people considerably outweigh the disadvantages because of the wisdom and practical knowledge old people possess.

It could be argued that governments require to invest more on the increasing number of elderly people. Old people tend to have more diseases than the youths, due to which they need proper care and treatment. For instance, elderly people in Bangladesh usually have a shorter lifespan and prone to get health issues in their early 50s. If the quantity of these people rises, then government will have to construct new regulations for their wellbeing as well as infrastructures to satiate their necessities. Eventually, government will need to make a whole new budget to serve the eldery people. However, the increasing number of old people may benefit the country as well.

Elderly people undoubtedly have more practical experience than the younger people. Their hands-on experience in different sectors as well as their wisdom can be implemented to enhance various sectors of a country. For example, a military veteran can train soldiers with many tactics and skills, which may enlighten the brave young soldiers of a country and enable them to defend their country efficiently. Similarly, an old people working on marketing for forty to fifty years can elucidate an intern properly with necessary advices. Therefore, it is essential for a country to have more elderly people so that a country can prosper even more than it used to.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that, the problems that governments face for the large number of older people will be alleviated by the advantages the elderly people bring to a country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe the benefits outweigh the costs, particularly because older people offer wisdom and practical knowledge. You address both sides, explaining pressure on healthcare and public spending before giving examples of veterans training soldiers and experienced workers advising interns. These examples are relevant, but the discussion is uneven: the disadvantages are described mainly as increased costs, while the benefits rely heavily on experience and are not fully weighed against those costs. The Bangladesh example is also unclear as support for the point about government burdens. Develop the comparison more explicitly—for instance, explain how older people’s contributions can offset public expenditure—to make the argument more fully supported and balanced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, separate body paragraphs discuss disadvantages and advantages, and the conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Similarly,” and “Therefore” help readers follow the examples and reasoning. This organisation is effective, but some connections are mechanical or imprecise. “However, the increasing number of old people may benefit the country as well” signals a shift, though it does not clearly explain how the benefits answer the preceding cost argument. The conclusion also repeats the position without drawing together the comparison. Use clearer transitions between the two sides and refer back to the central weighing of costs and contributions to strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “aging population,” “practical experience,” “infrastructures,” and “wellbeing,” and several less common expressions help convey your ideas. Meaning remains clear throughout. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “invest more on,” “satiate their necessities,” and “necessary advices.” There is also a spelling error in “eldery,” and “an old people” is an incorrect expression. These slips limit the precision and naturalness of the vocabulary, even though they do not prevent understanding. Aim for conventional academic collocations and check spelling and countability when using less familiar words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because of the wisdom…” and “which may enlighten the brave young soldiers.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the range is sufficient to discuss causes, examples, and results. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “governments require to invest” needs a different verb pattern, while “an old people working…” has an article and number mismatch. In “a shorter lifespan and prone to get health issues,” the parallel structure is incomplete, and “an intern properly with necessary advices” also contains a sentence-pattern problem. Review verb patterns, agreement, articles, and parallel constructions to improve accuracy while retaining your complex sentences.
