Student answer (Band 5.5)

In several countries, people are now living longer than the average life expectancy than before. Some people believe that an aging population creates problems for governments. Others argue that there are benefits if society has more elderly people. In my opinion, the advantages of having an aging population outweigh its disadvantages which will be discussed in this essay.

Firstly, One of the main advantages of having an aging population is the experience that the elderly people have. Individuals who have gotten older consist of years of experience and this experience is really beneficial for the younger generation. For instance, the mistakes that the older people made can be avoided by the younger generation, if they are tought how to avoid the path that lead to those mistakes. Furthermore, elderly people knows more about the country they are living in than anyone else. This will particularly aid the government and especially the nation with some parts of their history that they were unaware about.

Secondly, for many families old people can become a burden, and many of the families even abondend them. This puts the pressure on the government of taking care of the elderly with the help of old age homes where they can live, but the burden is shifted to the government now. Moreover, elder people can only be helpful till a certain age, and after that they won't be able to help in anything. For instance, memory is one thing that gets affected the most while aging and memory is something which is needed while taking help from the elderly.

In conclusion, there are disadvantages of an aging population for governments like being a burden on them and not being helpful after a certain age. I believe that the advantages surely outweigh these disadvantages, as the elderly can provide us the experience they've gain througout their life and can also help in a nations history.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the question and state a clear view in the introduction and conclusion: you believe the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. The discussion of older people sharing experience, and the pressure on governments to provide care, is relevant. However, the advantages are not weighed convincingly against the disadvantages. The claim that elderly people know more about a country’s history is asserted rather than explained, and the essay gives little detail about how this knowledge benefits society or government. The disadvantages paragraph is more developed, including care homes and memory loss, which makes the overall argument feel unbalanced. To strengthen the response, explain the practical value of older people’s experience and compare it directly with the costs and care needs you identify.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” help identify the stages of the response. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the first body paragraph moves from experience to avoiding mistakes and then to national history without showing how these points connect. The second paragraph combines family abandonment, government care and memory loss, but the relationship between these ideas is not consistently signposted. Some linking is mechanical, and references such as “This” in “This puts the pressure” could be more precise. Group related points and use clearer links to show how each example supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “aging population,” “life expectancy,” “younger generation,” and “old age homes.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “shifted to the government,” although the phrasing is not fully natural. The range is limited by repeated use of “elderly people,” “experience,” and “burden,” and several word-choice or spelling errors are noticeable: “tought,” “abondend,” and “througout.” Some collocations are awkward, including “consist of years of experience” and “helpful in anything.” Aim for more precise, natural combinations and check spelling carefully; this will make the argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the path that lead to those mistakes” and a conditional construction with “if they are taught.” However, complex structures are often inaccurate, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. Examples include “people are now living longer than the average life expectancy than before,” where the comparison is not grammatically formed, and “elderly people knows,” which has subject–verb disagreement. In “the advantages … outweigh its disadvantages which will be discussed,” the clause attachment is unclear. Capitalisation after “Firstly” and punctuation around the opening sentence of the conclusion also need attention. Practise accurate agreement, comparisons and clause construction before adding further complexity.
