Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many countries, people are now living longer than ever before. It is often believed that an aging population creates problem for goverments but I disagree with this point of view. In my opinion, every individual can serve a purpose and contribute towards the betterment of their nation.

Elderly people have good amount of experience and their experience can be of much use while making new government policies. They have seen different decades and their analysis about wellbeing of nation should be considered. Their input can be taken through questionnaires. Instead of worrying about aging population, government and NGOs should focus on their wellbeing and improving their quality of life. I believe an aged healthy individual can contribute more in a society than a young indivual with no experience. There are more advantages of having aging population not only for the government but for the families as well. Many studies have also reported that having family around is one one of the major source of joy and wellbeing. Young individuals who have their parents and grandparents alive and healthy feel blessed and less stressed. There are many factors which outnumber the disadvantages of having aging population.

For instance, my grandmother who is about 83 years is alive and her presence means a lot to our family. Her experience, wisdom, prayers and meaningful insights about different areas of life has helped our family. In my opinion, while making any decision, one should get the perspective of an elderly person because most of the times they have faced similar situation to ours and know the dynamics better.

In conclusion, elderly population benefits a society in many ways on government level as well as domestic level. However, these elderly population should be provided with good facilities, and some policies should be made to monitor their health and activities of daily living so they can contribute in a better way towards society and their surroundings.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you disagree that an ageing population is mainly a problem and argue that older people benefit both governments and families. You address both sides of the question and support your view with relevant points, including older people’s experience in policy-making and your grandmother’s contribution to family life. However, the disadvantages are not explained or weighed against the advantages in much detail, even though the question asks to what extent the advantages outweigh them. The claims about policy input and family wellbeing would also be stronger with more specific explanation or evidence. Develop the opposing view briefly, then show why your examples make the benefits more significant.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, supporting discussion, a personal example and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress from contributions to government and families, and phrases such as “For instance” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages. However, the second paragraph contains several different points in quick succession, and the relationship between them is not always made explicit. The repeated references to advantages and disadvantages also make the progression feel somewhat circular. Group related ideas into clearer paragraphs and use linking language to show how each example supports your position. Clarify references such as “these elderly population” so the reader can follow the argument smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “wellbeing,” “quality of life,” “policies,” “wisdom,” and “meaningful insights.” These choices help communicate your main ideas, and the personal example is expressed clearly. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, such as “good amount of experience,” “on government level,” and “activities of daily living.” Spelling errors in “goverments” and “indivual” are noticeable, although the intended meaning remains clear. Aim for more precise, natural phrasing and check spelling carefully; this will make your argument sound more fluent and appropriately academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “while” and “because,” and most of the message remains easy to understand. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “an aging population creates problem” needs a plural noun or an article, while “one one of the major source” has repetition and incorrect number agreement. In “these elderly population should be provided,” the demonstrative and noun do not agree. There are also long sentences where punctuation and clause boundaries could be clearer. Review agreement and article use, and divide longer sentences where needed to improve accuracy without losing structural variety.
