Student answer (Band 6.0)

In a lot of countries due to scientific advancements and progress in the health department and medicine made humans life span a lot longer. Some people speculate that elder population can make many problems for governments. Other people believe that there can be many positive benefits if a society has quite a lot older people.

Nowadays people live longer as compared to before. Even if we look back at just a century ago, The average life of a human has increased significantly. With the increase in the number of elderly population, people believe that government policies are either made according to how people used to live in the past few decades which was obviously less in comparison to today and it is creating many difficulties for the governments around the world. For example, government in Pakistan is making policies to reduce the pansion of people retireing now a days because the government used to pay them and with the increase in hte average of a human life it was costing a lot. Also elder people can not work as efficient as younger generation so even if they want to work it can not be beneficial for anyone to hire a older person if they have a choice to hire a young person.

But there are always two side of a single coin. There are also a lot of advantages older population can bring to the table as well. As you age the more wisdom you have, so older generation generally do know how to solve everyday life problems better than younger generation. Also an older person who used to do the tough job such as a surgeon who is now retired can teach better to younger generation as he has the in hand experience of it. Such example can help both the older population as well as younger and both can be beneficial to governments. Even if we ignore all of these points, older people are the one who shape the next generation so an educated older population with the modern mindset can make younger generation into a society of progressive people.

In conclusion, even though there are some disadvantage that comes with older population, the advantages surely outweighs them by quite of lot of margin.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both sides of the question and state a clear position in the conclusion: the advantages “surely outweigh” the disadvantages. The discussion includes relevant points about pension costs and older people’s experience, with examples such as a retired surgeon teaching younger colleagues. This meets the task well overall. However, some ideas are more fully explained than others: the claim that older people are less efficient and less attractive to employers is asserted rather than supported, and the benefits of wisdom and shaping the next generation could be linked more explicitly to wider social or governmental outcomes. To strengthen the response, explain the consequences of each main point and make the comparison between the advantages and disadvantages more explicit throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on disadvantages, a paragraph on advantages, and a conclusion. The contrast between the two sides is easy to follow, and signposts such as “For example,” “But,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This shows a coherent arrangement, though some linking is mechanical or imprecise. For instance, “But there are always two side of a single coin” is a formulaic transition, and “Even if we ignore all of these points” does not clearly show how the next idea relates to the previous benefits. Some references, such as “both can be beneficial,” leave the reader to infer exactly what “both” means. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and organise each paragraph around a clear main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “scientific advancements,” “pension,” “wisdom,” “in-hand experience,” and “progressive.” These choices allow you to discuss both economic pressures and the contribution of older people. However, the range and control are uneven, with noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation problems: “pansion,” “retireing,” and “hte” are errors, while “the average of a human life” and “make many problems” are unnatural expressions. Repetition of “older people,” “generation,” and “beneficial” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and check spelling and common word partnerships; this would make your argument clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “Even if” and “as,” and most of the argument remains understandable. However, some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation reduce accuracy. For example, “In a lot of countries due to scientific advancements … made humans life span” is an incomplete and awkwardly constructed sentence, while “there are some disadvantage that comes” has a plural-agreement problem. In “an older person … can teach better to younger generation,” the article and sentence pattern are also faulty. Capitalisation after “ago” and comma use need attention. Practise building complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check agreement and articles when editing.
