Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that youngster need to choose group activites in their spare time, while others believe that it is beneficial to learn how to spend time alone. Both perspectives have their own merits. This essay will examine both viewpoints before explaining why I believe group activity contribution is more convincing.

Those who support yougster to participate in teamwork activities in their leisure time helps them learning teamwork, co-operation among kids and time management will contribute major essential skills in their early age. This is mainly because children will not get chance to learn those in schools andmore confident about their creativity, as schooling mostly focus on their academic and practical skills. As a result, pupils get a chance to enhance their personal development. For example, a child who joins a football team not only improves physical fitness but also learns teamwork, leadership, and time management, which are useful throughout life.

On the other hand, many people believe that children should have the freedom to spend their leisure time on their own rather than participating in organised group activities. They argue that spending time alone encourages independence, self-confidence, and creativity. When children read books, draw, solve puzzles, or simply explore their own interests, they learn to make decisions without relying on others. Moreover, unstructured free time allows them to relax and discover their personal talents. For example, a child who enjoys painting or reading alone may develop artistic or intellectual abilities that might not emerge in organised settings.

In conclusion, although allowing children to spend time alone can help them become more independent and creative, I believe that participating in organised group activities is more beneficial. Such activities equip children with essential social, communication, and teamwork skills that prepare them for future academic and professional success.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported with examples, such as the football team for group activities and painting for individual pursuits. However, the development of ideas in the second paragraph is slightly hampered by grammatical issues, making some arguments feel a bit rushed. The position is consistent throughout the response, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of why group activities are 'more convincing' is more deeply explored in the body paragraphs rather than just stated in the introduction and conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'For example', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the slightly awkward phrasing in the second paragraph ('Those who support yougster to participate... helps them learning'). Improving the transition between sentences would enhance the overall flow and make the cohesion feel more natural and sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'unstructured free time', 'personal development', and 'intellectual abilities'. However, there are several spelling errors ('youngster' vs 'youngsters', 'activites', 'yougster') and some slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'group activity contribution'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise and varied vocabulary would be needed to reach the higher bands. Focusing on accurate word forms and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'Those who support yougster to participate... helps them learning' (subject-verb agreement and gerund usage) and 'schooling mostly focus' (should be 'focuses'). Punctuation is generally correct, but some sentence constructions are slightly clunky. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy. The current level of error is noticeable but does not prevent the reader from understanding the main points.
