Student answer (Band 7.0)

Few individuals believe that guardians are responsible to push their kids to utilize their leisure time towards group activities. Others think that they should be left alone to let them learn on their own. While being a member of group helps children brush their social skills, being by themselves provide them an opportunity to improve their survival and individual skills.

On one hand, participation in such events offers plenty of opportunities to learn and improve their public skills. Children get to learn importance of team work, at an early age. Involvement of an interaction, the planning, the decision making and following orders help them understand how a system works. For example, they can witness how a chain is as strong, as it's weakest link. Moreover, there are opportunities to get over the fear of public speaking, which boosts their confidence and attitude.

On the other hand, being alone rewards them with the survival skills. They are able to identify their hidden interests and skills in that phase. Given no instructions, they are able to improve their time management skills. This method would let them be in control of their own thoughts.

To conclude, I believe these both methods are equally important to learn basic but important life skills. Not only they can improve themselves as an individual around others, they can be in control of their mind when they are alone. Hence, I feel parents' supervision to make sure that their kids are getting enough time to utilize their time in these both approaches would work efficiently.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefits of teamwork and the development of individual survival skills. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'survival skills' is mentioned but not fully explained or exemplified in a concrete way. The essay meets the requirements of the prompt, but to reach a higher band, the arguments need more depth and specific examples to support the claims made in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the transition between the benefits of teamwork and the mention of public speaking could be more fluid. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'brush their social skills' and 'time management skills'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'Few individuals believe' (which implies almost no one believes, whereas you likely meant 'Some') and 'public skills' (which is not a standard collocation; 'social skills' or 'interpersonal skills' would be better). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'being by themselves provide' (subject-verb agreement error: should be 'provides') and 'these both methods' (should be 'both these methods'). Additionally, there are some punctuation and article errors, such as 'Involvement of an interaction' and 'as it's weakest link' (should be 'its'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy would improve this score.
