Student answer (Band 6.5)

A growing number of people believe that children should take participate in organised group activities during their leisure time. Others argue that it is essential for children to entertain themselves independently. Therefore, I agree with both the views, as organised tasks allow them to develop new essential life skills, whereas, me-time offers them an opportunity to work on their hobbies without any disturbance.

On the one hand, taking part in organised group activities encourage them to develop important social and interpersonal skills. For instance, a lot of sports games promote the children to being a social and active person, inculcate skills like good communication, cooperation, teamwork, leadership and critical-thinking for their successful career in sports. Moreover, it will improve their mind-body coordination, strengthen their muscles and enhance their fitness. Such as, football game is one of the best example of organised activity, which is responsible for overall growth and well-being of children during their growing age, allow them to adapt good habits and reduce the feeling of loneliness and social isolation.

On the other hand, it is mandatory for children to learn about how to make themselves busy in certain activities and spend time in order to evaluate their mistakes and weakness. For example, taking part in reading books, solving puzzles or painting promote them to improve their concentration power and generate innovative ideas in their mind. Sometimes it is necessary for them to stay away from organised activities, because it will make them more reliant on other people's guidance and support. Therefore, independent time offer them to identify their hidden talent and get relaxing experience after long study hours.

In conclusion, spending time for organised activities are responsible for important social and intellectual skills. Whereas, self-time allows them to recognise their potential, have some time for hobbies, strengthen their focus and provide a satisfactory feelings.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. For instance, the benefits of group activities (social skills, physical health) and independent time (concentration, self-reflection) are clearly articulated. However, the development is occasionally repetitive, and some arguments could be more nuanced. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of why independent time is 'mandatory' is balanced with more sophisticated reasoning rather than just listing activities like reading or puzzles.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there is some mechanical use of these devices, and the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly disjointed. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. The referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be more natural to improve the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication of ideas. There is an attempt to use less common items such as 'interpersonal skills,' 'inculcate,' and 'innovative,' which is positive. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'promote the children to being' (should be 'encourage children to be') and 'satisfactory feelings' (should be 'sense of satisfaction'). These errors do not impede communication but prevent the use of vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise' at a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, such as 'spending time for organised activities are' (should be 'is') and 'football game is one of the best example' (should be 'examples'). Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and word forms, such as 'the children to being a social and active person.' These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. A greater variety of error-free complex structures would be required for a higher score.
