IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that parents should encourage their children to take part in organised group activities in their free time. Others say that it is important for children to learn how to occupy themselves on their own.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There are split opinions regarding whether juveniles should participate in group activities or learn to enjoy their own company during leisure time. Some people think that children need to attend group activities in their spare time, whereas another group of thinkers supports learning to manage everything on their own. However, both have their own pros and cons. Therefore, before giving my own decision, both views are discussed in the following paragraphs.
Examining the former opinion, the primary argument the supporters would put forward is the development of overall personality. This is because children do different activities in group activities such as mathematics quizzes, playing chess, singing, and so on. They learn many things from each other owing to every person having different skills and ideas; therefore, not only do children learn each other's abilities but also become able to understand various mindsets. To exemplify this, in 2001, a survey was conducted by psychologists that proved that people are always motivated and excited to learn more in group activities instead of learning alone.
On the contrary, the latter view suggests that learning alone improves young people's concentration. In other words, children are not disturbed by anyone when they work alone they focus increases day by day by practising on a daily basis. To substantiate it, when toddlers do anything on their own, their observation power is better than other students. As a result, juveniles become independent and never try to find assistance from anyone unless they can suffer by their own.
To conclude, although children become independent and confident and do not try to find help but working in group toodles become broad-minded and improve communication with time. In my opinion, children should learn how to work in groups for the betterment of their future in their leisure time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both sides of the question and state a clear preference for group activities in the conclusion. The discussion of group participation is supported with examples such as quizzes, chess and singing, and you explain how children can learn from one another’s skills and perspectives. The case for independent activities also identifies concentration and independence as benefits. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the claim that working alone improves “observation power” is not clearly connected to the argument, and the survey reference is too general to provide convincing support. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation or a relevant, specific example, and make your own position more explicit before the conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The contrast between the views is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “On the contrary” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the argument. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in connecting ideas. However, several transitions feel formulaic, and some links within sentences are unclear. For instance, “when they work alone they focus increases” makes the relationship between the ideas difficult to follow, while the conclusion combines several points without a clear progression. Use fewer stock transitions and make the connection between each claim and its explanation more explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “overall personality,” “concentration,” “independent,” and “broad-minded.” There are also attempts at less common or formal expressions, such as “substantiate” and “mindsets,” which show ambition. Some choices, however, are inaccurate or unnatural: “a group of thinkers” is an awkward way to describe people who hold a view, “do different activities in group activities” is repetitive, and “suffer by their own” does not express the intended meaning. “Toodles” also appears to be a spelling or word-choice error. Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than formal-sounding phrases, and check that each word conveys the intended idea.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a conditional-style explanation and the inversion in “not only do children learn … but also become able to understand.” These attempts show some range, and the main ideas are generally understandable. However, some grammatical errors remain and occasionally make relationships unclear. In “when they work alone they focus increases,” the clause needs a clear subject and possessive form, such as “their focus increases.” The sentence beginning “although children become independent” is not completed with a balanced contrast, and “unless they can suffer by their own” has an unclear clause structure. Review sentence boundaries and ensure that subordinate clauses are followed by a complete, logically connected main clause.
