Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing this letter to inform you that there are several compliants about the reception area from the frequent visitors.
Most of the complaints that we received are from the local vendors and the servicing people who often visit the company to deliver goods, packages and couriers. Their main concerns are that the reception area is not well maintained, the notes, invoices and good slips aren't organized and so the wait time is longer than expected.
For any organization, the reception is the first view for any people who walks-in, thereby this is the prime spot that speaks about the culture and vision of our company. When this becomes a question, its more obvious that it will be a direct impact on the orders and profits.
I would like to suggest that receptionist should be given more responsibilities and the care to make it organized and ease our customers and partners to make a good impression.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the nature of the complaints, the importance of the reception area, and suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the suggestion to 'give the receptionist more responsibilities' is quite vague and lacks specific, actionable detail. To reach a higher band, you should expand on how exactly the area could be improved, such as suggesting a digital check-in system or a specific filing cabinet for invoices. The response is clear and maintains a consistent professional position throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'For any organization' and 'thereby', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly, as some sentences feel slightly disconnected from one another.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'servicing people', 'well maintained', and 'direct impact'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'compliants' (spelling) and 'good slips' (likely meaning 'goods slips' or 'delivery notes'). The phrasing 'first view for any people who walks-in' is slightly unnatural. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and checking spelling will help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'its more obvious' (should be 'it is' or 'it's') and 'receptionist should be given' (missing an article, 'the receptionist'). Additionally, 'any people who walks-in' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('people' is plural, so 'walk' is correct). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, ensure you proofread for subject-verb agreement and article usage, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures to demonstrate greater control.
