Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Alex,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing to suggest a some required reception area needs to be improved. We have heard many complaints about the front desk area of the office. Complaints are including our receptionist's behavior with customers, vendors or clients as she is getting frustrate when they ask for some information. Also, when clients visit the office, they could not find a sitting area near the reception, and they have to wait.

I believe, in office the reception area is important as it is the only area when someone visit the office, they can get a idea about our office atmosphere. It is also plays a vital role to maintain office's reputation, so we can build our good relationship with everyone.

For improvements, we could give a proper training to front desk department about our polices, and vision for client's happiness, so they would understand how to handle and behave with our partners who involve in the business. Also, we have a enough space near the main entrance, we can build a new sitting or waiting area, so no one has to stand when they visit the office.

I hope you will review all complaints and will take necessary action on this matter.

Yours Sincerely,

Nishu Agrawal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. Your tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the receptionist's behavior, you could have provided a more specific example of a complaint to make your argument more persuasive. Similarly, the suggestions for improvement are clear but could be expanded with more detail regarding the implementation of the training or the specific design of the waiting area. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'I believe', and 'For improvements' to guide the reader through your arguments. While the progression of ideas is clear, the use of linking words is somewhat repetitive and occasionally mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your transitions and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'they', 'this') is always precise to avoid any ambiguity. Overall, the structure is sound and the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'reputation', 'atmosphere', and 'policies' appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'getting frustrate' instead of 'getting frustrated' and 'partners who involve in the business' instead of 'partners involved in the business'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'suggest a some required reception area needs to be improved' (which is syntactically confused) and 'it is also plays a vital role'. Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and verb tenses. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your sentence construction to ensure greater accuracy in complex structures.
