Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception, and suggesting improvements. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the depth of the ideas. The ideas are relevant but somewhat underdeveloped; for instance, the explanation of why the reception is important is brief and could be expanded with more specific examples of how it affects the company's reputation. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a manager, though the opening and closing are slightly informal. To improve, ensure you expand on each point to meet the word count and provide more detailed suggestions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. There is a basic attempt at using cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'I suggest them to recruit', where the pronoun 'them' does not clearly refer back to the manager. The paragraphing is present but could be more effectively used to separate the distinct points of the letter. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun references would help improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of awkward word choice, such as 'due to certain complaints' and 'put impact not only sales'. The student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles with collocations, such as 'hire poor staff' instead of 'hiring staff with poor skills'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice that occasionally make the writing sound unnatural. Expanding the range of vocabulary and focusing on correct collocations would significantly improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with articles ('the reception area'), subject-verb agreement ('Staff unable to attract'), and preposition usage ('regarding to'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing commas and capitalization errors. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. To reach a higher band, the student needs to focus on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with verb forms and sentence construction, and ensure that complex sentences are formed correctly.
