Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John,

I am writing to provide valueable feedback for improving the reception area of our company.

The customers had made several complaints related to the area. Initially, their is a lack of space in the area. We usually have a face-to-face interaction with our clients at reception area of the company and a lack of space my change their midnset towards the firm. Secondly, we need a receptionist at the desk, but we have hired our employee who is not able to work accurately.

However, the reception area is important because the customers usually get any infomation from the reception area only. Moreover, the reception area provides assitance about the company and also help in performing other tasks.

I would say the area would be improved by increasing the size and providing benches to sit where people can sit and wait for their turn. Furthermore, a well-trained receptionest should be hired who would provide help in maintaining the tasks related to office and work place. I would appreciate it if you would solve the issue as early as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the complaints regarding space and staff, explain the importance of the reception area for client interaction, and provide specific suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of why the current employee is not working 'accurately' is vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully extended with more specific detail or examples to demonstrate a more sophisticated grasp of the situation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your points. While the structure is sound, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. The transition between the importance of the area and the suggestions for improvement is clear, but the overall progression could be smoother with more varied linking phrases. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose of each section is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'interaction', 'mindset', and 'assistance'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'valueable' (valuable), 'their' instead of 'there', 'midnset' (mindset), 'infomation' (information), and 'receptionest' (receptionist). These errors are noticeable and detract from the professional tone of the letter. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, you need to improve your accuracy in spelling and word choice to achieve a higher band score. Focus on proofreading your work to catch these common slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I would appreciate it if you would solve the issue as early as possible.' There are several grammatical errors, including 'their is a lack of space' (there is) and 'my change their midnset' (might change). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common grammatical slips, particularly with homophones and verb forms.
