Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to provide a few suggestions to improve our company reception area.
I would like to aware you that, there are several complaints have been made by the visitors from last month. Some visitors were complaint about the reception area was too small and there were poor sitting arrangements. In addition, people also mentioned they found difficulties to find washrooms and toilets because it was very far from the reception area.
Personally, I believe reception area illustrate the picture of the company, If visitors found difficulties in reception area it will put negative impact on their minds.
I believe, we can increase the size of the reception area by demolished the unused storage area, and also build the new washrooms near the reception area. Apart from these, we can also include the additional chairs to improve our sitting arrangements. I would like to prepare AutoCad drawings to organise the place efficiently if needed.
I would like to appreciate your consideration of this matter. I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Parminder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the complaints regarding the size and facilities, explained the importance of the reception area as a reflection of the company, and provided actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'importance' section by discussing how a poor reception area might specifically affect client retention or professional reputation, rather than just stating it creates a 'negative impact'. Overall, the response is clear and fully meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Apart from these', and 'Personally' to connect your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the complaints and the importance of the area could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'arrangements', 'efficiently', and 'consideration'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'I would like to aware you' (should be 'make you aware') and 'by demolished' (should be 'by demolishing'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. You have a sufficient vocabulary to convey your message clearly, but expanding your range of formal business-related terminology would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'there are several complaints have been made' (should be 'several complaints have been made') and 'If visitors found difficulties' (should be 'If visitors find difficulties'). Additionally, 'reception area illustrate' should be 'reception area illustrates'. While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures will help you achieve a higher band score.
