Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email in regards to discuss the complaints about our front desk area.

To commence with, guests are not satisfied with the customer service because we only have 3 attendants in the morning shift. Long lineups are made for check in/out, as a result visitor gets frustrated. Additionally, the restroom are filthy because the consumption is significant higher and 2 washrooms are less to fulfill.

It is essential for us to maintain, our reception area as it is the first point of contact for our beloved guest other than that people watching from outside should have a clear and organized frame. This practice will boost our overall performance in sales.

Their are several ways, we can improve firstly, more washrooms should be constructed and housekeeping should be assigned for it's cleanliness. More staff should be appointed, in the morning to look after guests. A new information booth should be made which will eventually assists the visitors in basic questions related to tourism and transport.

I am looking forward your response, I honestly feel you will take this letter into consideration and affirm policies will be applied.

Best wishes,

David

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation regarding why the reception is important is a bit vague, and the suggestion for a new information booth could be more clearly linked to the specific complaints mentioned earlier. Overall, the response is relevant and covers all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The use of cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Additionally', and 'firstly' helps guide the reader through the text. However, there are some minor issues with punctuation and sentence flow, such as the unnecessary comma in 'maintain, our reception area' and 'appointed, in the morning'. While these do not impede communication, they slightly affect the overall flow. The progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'frustrated' and 'essential'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'consumption is significant higher' (should be 'significantly higher') and '2 washrooms are less to fulfill' (which is awkward phrasing). Despite these minor errors, the range of vocabulary is sufficient to address the topic, and the meaning is never in doubt.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the restroom are filthy') and incorrect word forms ('eventually assists' instead of 'eventually assist'). Punctuation errors, such as the misuse of commas, are also present. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on improving accuracy in basic sentence construction and proofreading for minor slips.
