Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Manager,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to share my suggestions regarding the recent complaints about the reception area.

First, we have received many compalints that visitors have to wait longer just to sign in because one recptionist is not enough to deal with them especially during the rush hours. Secondly, people usually get confused due to lack of signage. In addition, it feels crowded beacuse of less seating area.

I feel the reception area should be the more welcoming and pleasent. It demonstartes the image of our business. so it would be a great initiatives to work on the compaints and make the reception area plesant and convenient place for visitiors.

To deal we that issues, we could hire one more reecption, and set up more seat in that area. Setting up proper sign would make all clients happy.

Please let me know if that

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required by the task: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why the reception area is important is brief, and the suggestions for improvement are quite basic. To achieve a higher band, you should expand on your ideas with more detail or examples. For example, when discussing the importance of the reception area, you could mention how it influences a client's first impression of the company's professionalism. The letter ends abruptly with an incomplete sentence, which affects the overall task completion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Secondly', and 'In addition' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. The transition between the description of the problems and the suggestions could be smoother. Additionally, the final sentence is incomplete ('Please let me know if that'), which disrupts the coherence of the closing. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your paragraphs are fully developed and conclude logically.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'convenient', 'demonstrates', and 'initiatives'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'compalints', 'recptionist', 'beacuse', 'pleasent', 'demonstartes', and 'reecption'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable, although they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve your score, focus on proofreading your work to catch these common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to business environments, such as 'professional image' or 'streamline the process'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the more welcoming and pleasent' (should be 'more welcoming and pleasant'), 'great initiatives' (should be 'great initiative'), and 'set up more seat' (should be 'seats'). The final sentence is also grammatically incomplete. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, pluralization, and ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and predicate.
