Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Shawn,

I am writing to share my concerns regarding recent complaints about reception area that have been raised by visitors. some clients mentioned that they have to wait a long time before someone greets them. Another point is they always feel crowded due to lack of seating area. In addion, some visitors felt unsure where to go because there is no clear sign.

The reception area is very important beacuse it creates first impression of our company. When visitors feel welcomed and comfortable, it reflects positivity of our professionalism. A well organized company also helps people to find the right department which improves overall efficiency.

To address this issue, it would be great to have a someone always available at the recption area to welcome clients or visitors especially during the busy hours. Having a proper signange or digital display would guide visitors in better way. Finally, replacing the old chairs with new furniture and adding some artwork in the reception room would definately improve the visitors' exeperience.

Thank you for considering my suggestions. I hope it would create a great image of our company.

Yours sincerely,

Hamad

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the complaints regarding wait times, crowding, and signage. You also explain the importance of the reception area in terms of first impressions and efficiency, and provide concrete suggestions for improvement, such as staffing, signage, and furniture. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The response is well-focused and covers all requirements of the task effectively, ensuring the reader understands the purpose and the proposed solutions clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a polite closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Finally', and 'When visitors feel...', which help to connect your ideas. However, the flow could be further improved by using a wider variety of linking words to transition between sentences more smoothly. Overall, the structure is clear and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'professionalism', 'efficiency', and 'signage' correctly. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'recption', 'definately', and 'exeperience', which are noticeable but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common vocabulary to express your ideas with more precision. For example, instead of 'create a great image', you could use 'enhance the corporate image'. Your current vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('the reception area', 'a someone') and minor errors in subject-verb agreement or word order ('it creates first impression'). Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on proofreading for small articles and prepositions, and try to vary your sentence structure further by using more complex clauses to connect your ideas.
