Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing a letter to express my concern about the reception area is being always the busiest part of our company by many visitors.
Firstly, today morning I checked a mailbox to collect the feedbacks, I noticed people are complaining about the long que for submitting admission form at the reception make area busy and crowded. There is a another reason employees need to submit their locker key at the reception make crowd over there.
Secondly, reception area is most important point for in and out in the office. It is good if we impress our visitors by keeping it spic and span as well as they can use as information desk. 'First impression is last' to define it is good if we keep it more approachable for every one.
Lastly, I would like to modify some system which will helpful to improve reception area more accessible for admission we can put scanner. Moreover, for locker key we can put basket at the front desk which will help the visitors. I guess this way we can manage wisely.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
yours faithfully,
Kiara

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why the area is important is brief, and the suggestions for improvement, while relevant, lack detail. The response covers the requirements, but the ideas could be expanded further to demonstrate a more professional and persuasive approach. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the depth of the content is at a basic level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The use of linking words such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' helps to guide the reader through the text. However, the flow within paragraphs is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and grammatical errors, which makes some sentences feel disjointed. For example, the transition between the complaint and the reason for the crowd is slightly abrupt. While the paragraphing is clear and appropriate, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical rather than fluid.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be understood. There are some attempts at using more specific vocabulary, such as 'spic and span' and 'approachable', but these are occasionally used in slightly unnatural ways. There are also some word-choice errors, such as 'collect the feedbacks' (feedback is uncountable) and 'make area busy' (which should be 'making the area busy'). The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include incorrect verb forms ('I am writing a letter to express my concern about the reception area is being'), missing articles ('checked a mailbox'), and subject-verb agreement errors ('people are complaining about the long que... make area busy'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent and noticeable. A greater focus on sentence construction and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
