Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email to complain about the reception area where visitors to our company arrive. Firstly, we should take into account the importance of describing complaints, which will contribute to the overall efficiency and well-being of the operations. Most people complain that this area is small for the setting and not proper lighting.

Also, if we consider the likelihood of why it is important, it is expected to have a three-fold effect due to several reasons, including that it is in the face of every company and it is an information area. Where people can wait for their appointments.

Moreover, how it can be improved should not be neglected, as it can increase the chance of success and quality of life. It can be improved by lighting.

I hope you will understand and build your reception area well.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

Best regards,

Jasvir kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points, but the development is quite limited. While you mention complaints, the importance of the area, and suggestions, the ideas are expressed in a very abstract and repetitive way. For example, instead of describing specific complaints like 'cramped seating' or 'poor lighting,' you use meta-language like 'we should take into account the importance of describing complaints.' This makes the response feel like a template rather than a genuine letter. To improve, focus on providing concrete details and professional suggestions, such as installing brighter LED lights or adding comfortable chairs, rather than discussing the act of complaining itself.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression is hindered by awkward phrasing and a lack of natural flow. The use of cohesive devices like 'Firstly,' 'Also,' and 'Moreover' is mechanical and sometimes used incorrectly, such as when you introduce the second paragraph with 'if we consider the likelihood of why it is important.' This phrasing is confusing and does not clearly link to the previous point. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that your transition words connect ideas naturally rather than just acting as labels for the bullet points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. You rely on generic phrases like 'take into account,' 'three-fold effect,' and 'not proper lighting.' There are also issues with word choice, such as 'it is in the face of every company,' which is not a standard English idiom for describing a company's image or first impression. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of precise, professional vocabulary prevents the letter from sounding like a formal business communication. Expanding your range to include more specific business-related terminology would significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For instance, 'not proper lighting' is grammatically incomplete, and 'build your reception area well' is an unnatural way to suggest renovations. There are also issues with sentence construction, such as the fragment 'Where people can wait for their appointments.' While you demonstrate an attempt at complex structures, the control is inconsistent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that every sentence has a clear main clause will help you achieve greater accuracy.
