Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to provide suggestions about how we can improve the reception area of our company for the guest.
Recently, I have noticed that many guests are complaining about the lack of adequate sitting arrangements and proper cleaning in the lobby which has detrimental impact on the reputation of our company. Since the reception area is the place where our many guests arrive to discuss about many aspect of business such as sales, profits and other special annual events therefore it is crucial to address this issue as soon as possible.
To improve our reception area, we can add extra chairs and tables including comfortable sofa for our guest. We can hire extra staff for regular cleaning and install a coffee machine for the guest. Although it may be expensive at the initial stage, it comes with long-term profit for our business. I hope you will consider my suggestion and take necessary actions for improvement at your earliest convenience.
Yours sincerely,
Sapna

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the complaints regarding seating and cleanliness, explained the importance of the reception area for business reputation, and provided actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why'—for instance, by elaborating on how a professional reception area influences a client's first impression or trust in the company. Overall, the response is clear, relevant, and fully meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Since', 'Although', and 'therefore' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of transition words to connect sentences more fluidly. For example, the transition between the complaints and the importance of the area is a bit abrupt. Overall, the structure is clear and effective for this type of correspondence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'detrimental impact', 'adequate', and 'at your earliest convenience'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'discuss about many aspect' (should be 'discuss many aspects') and 'comes with long-term profit' (better phrased as 'will yield long-term benefits'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise business-related collocations would elevate the quality of your writing and demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the 'Although...' sentence in the final paragraph. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'for the guest' (should be plural 'guests' to match the context) and 'many aspect' (should be 'many aspects'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in the second paragraph where a comma is missing before 'therefore'. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammar is generally reliable. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and pluralization consistency throughout your writing.
