Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing formally to give some suggestions on complaints about our company's reception area. There have been so many complaints about it because of some inconvenience.

The main concern is lake of seating space. For instance, there is no seating area for at least 5 to 10 visitors. We should improve that, if there are more then 5 people they have to stand because of small seat arrangements. On the other hand there is another complaint about housekeeping. Housekeepers are always on leaves and the reception area is not cleaned and its our responsibility to keep clean the area.

I would appreciate if we can arrange wider area for seating, then it would be best for our Company. As well as, hire a housekeeper who comes everyday and do cleaning on daily bases.

Thank you for your attention. I expect that the action will be take soon. Please contact me for further information.

Your Sincerely,

Ram.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the area, and suggesting improvements. However, the second bullet point regarding the importance of the reception area is only implicitly touched upon rather than explicitly stated. The ideas are relevant but could be more fully developed to reach a higher band. For example, while you mention the lack of seating, you could expand on how this impacts the company's professional image. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, though some phrasing is slightly informal.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'For instance' and 'On the other hand' to link ideas. However, the transition between paragraphs is sometimes a bit abrupt, and the use of cohesive devices is occasionally mechanical. For example, 'As well as' is used incorrectly at the start of a sentence. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used in the correct grammatical context would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'inconvenience', 'housekeeping', and 'arrangements'. However, there are several instances of word choice errors and spelling mistakes, such as 'lake' instead of 'lack', 'more then' instead of 'more than', and 'on daily bases' instead of 'on a daily basis'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the action will be take' (should be 'taken'), 'keep clean the area' (should be 'keep the area clean'), and 'I would appreciate if we can' (should be 'could'). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your suggestions. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice constructions.
