Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to express my views as well as suggestions related to inconvenience faced by visitors in our company’s reception area.

As we are aware, some backpackers raised an issue related to sitting arrangement in the reception. They argued that sitting chairs are not sufficient there and sometime they had to stand for long time.

We know that reception area is very crucial as every customer arrives there for seeking an assistance. Most of the people judge the company’s reputation from the front door area. Therefore, we need to make some amendments there.

First of all, I think we should expand our reception area for consumers as well as also organize a well-maintained sitting arrangement for them. Moreover, we should place some fresh and comfortable chairs for them so that they can relax there while waiting for their turn.

I am looking forward to take immediate actions to resolve this crisis.

Your’s faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the complaints regarding the lack of seating, explained the importance of the reception area for the company's image, and provided clear suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To improve, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how the expansion of the reception area would specifically benefit the company's workflow or visitor experience. Overall, the response is clear, relevant, and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally good, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, ensure that your paragraphing is consistent. The use of referencing is clear, and the reader can easily follow your argument from the initial problem to the proposed solution. Further practice with a wider variety of linking words would help elevate your score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'inconvenience', 'crucial', 'amendments', and 'well-maintained'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'seeking an assistance' (should be 'seeking assistance') and 'take immediate actions' (should be 'take immediate action'). The vocabulary is generally functional and appropriate for a professional context. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. Your spelling is accurate throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'sometime they had to stand' (should be 'sometimes they have to stand') and 'Your’s faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage, such as 'in the reception' (should be 'in the reception area'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct punctuation in formal closings will help improve your accuracy.
