Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing in response to your letter seeking my advice on improvements in the reception area. As there have been several complaints already raised by visitors regarding this matter, it needs some sudden changes.
While there have been numerous complaints about the seating area, there are more than that for its closeness to washrooms. Visitors are complaining about bad smell. Apart from this, they said that lighting in the area is low, which puts more strain on their eyes while reading the company's history and market trends.
The reception area is crucial, because it presents the image of the company, and it is the first place where visitors go after entering the company. If the visitors will get negative impression from the reception area, they would be unwilling to make huge at first. Hence, it will reduce company's profits and earning.
I believe to solve these issues, the washrooms need to be relocated near the entrance so that there is no chance of foul smell, and additionally, they should be cleaned every two hours to keep them fresh. Also, there are new lights in the market which would enhance the lighting in the area, and their five star ratings mean, they would be cost effective as well.
Thanks for taking my suggestions into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Vivek

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You described the complaints regarding the seating, washroom proximity, and lighting. You explained the importance of the reception area as the company's 'first impression' and provided specific, logical suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for instance, the suggestion about relocating washrooms is quite radical and could be expanded upon by mentioning the feasibility or the benefit to the overall office layout. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a polite closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this,' 'Hence,' and 'additionally' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the importance of the reception and the suggested improvements could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the task. The progression of ideas is logical, making the letter easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'puts more strain on their eyes' and 'taking my suggestions into consideration' are natural and appropriate. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'unwilling to make huge at first,' which is unclear. Additionally, 'sudden changes' is slightly unnatural in this context; 'immediate improvements' would be more precise. While you use some less common vocabulary, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated collocations to enhance the professional tone of the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'If the visitors will get negative impression,' where the conditional structure is incorrect (it should be 'If visitors get a negative impression, they would...'). Another error is 'there are more than that for its closeness,' which is slightly awkward. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on mastering conditional sentences and ensuring consistent use of articles (e.g., 'the' company, 'a' negative impression).
