Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Eric,
The purpose of my writing today is to inform you about regarding the recent complaints we have received for our reception block and I would like to provide my suggestions for its improvement.
Firstly, I would like start with the feedbacks we have received. Most people complained about dull lights at the entrance of area and lesser seating capacity. There were some comments regarding the cleanliness as well.
Secondly, this area is most crucial area for any organization; as first impression is the last impression for any company. Moreover, customers tend to make judgement based on how reception area is looking, as they have to wait in that area before their meeting with stakeholders.
Furthermore, I would also like to share some suggestion for improvement. To start with we could add more white bright lights and chairs. Later on, we could hire an architect to refurbished the whole area with brighter colors.
I am looking forward to seeing how my suggestions translate into prompt actions from your side. Furthermore, an open line of communication, from your side, in this case would greatly help out.
Yours sincerely,
Karan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, some ideas could be developed further to reach a higher band. For instance, when mentioning the complaints about cleanliness, you could have specified what exactly was untidy. Similarly, your suggestions for improvement are a bit brief. Expanding on how an architect could specifically improve the flow or functionality of the space would demonstrate a more thorough engagement with the task. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. You have used transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your arguments. While the paragraphing is appropriate, some of the cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the importance of the area and the suggestions could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing is generally clear, though the sentence 'Most people complained about dull lights at the entrance of area' is missing an article, which slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant business-related terms like 'stakeholders', 'prompt actions', and 'organization'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you wrote 'the feedbacks we have received' (feedback is an uncountable noun and should not be pluralized) and 'refurbished the whole area' (the infinitive should be 'to refurbish'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered sophisticated or highly precise. Expanding your range of collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'The purpose of my writing today is to inform you about regarding' (redundant prepositions), 'dull lights at the entrance of area' (missing article), and 'as first impression is the last impression' (missing articles). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on article usage and subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures, such as using more conditional or passive constructions, would also help demonstrate better control over grammatical range.
