Student answer (Band 8.5)
Dear Mr Smith,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing regarding the reception area, as several visitors have recently expressed concerns about the facilities. I would like to suggest a few improvements that could enhance their overall experience.
Firstly, many visitors have complained that there are not enough seats in the waiting area, which often becomes crowded during busy hours. In addition, some people have mentioned that the reception desk is poorly signposted, making it difficult for first-time visitors to find assistance. As a result, visitors sometimes experience unnecessary delays and frustration.
I believe the reception area is extremely important because it creates the first impression of our company. A clean, comfortable, and well-organised reception area reflects professionalism and helps visitors feel welcome. It also contributes to the company's reputation and demonstrates that we value our clients and business partners.
I would appreciate it if the company could provide additional seating, install clearer directional signs, and improve the lighting in the reception area. Additionally, displaying company information and offering complimentary drinking water would make visitors more comfortable while they wait. I believe these improvements would significantly enhance the overall experience for everyone.
Thank you for considering my suggestions. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Yours sincerely,
Navpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response fully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the complaints regarding seating and signage, explain the importance of the reception area in terms of company image, and provide a comprehensive list of suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and logically presented, meeting all the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear structure. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'As a result', and 'Additionally', which help guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the body points, and the conclusion. The flow is smooth and natural throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for a professional context. Phrases like 'expressed concerns', 'well-organised', 'reflects professionalism', and 'significantly enhance' show a good command of language. The vocabulary is precise and fits the context well. While the range is sufficient and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific terms could elevate the response further, but the current usage is natural and error-free.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5
The grammar is highly accurate throughout the letter. You use a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences such as 'I believe the reception area is extremely important because it creates the first impression of our company.' Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no noticeable errors in tense, subject-verb agreement, or word order. The control over grammatical structures is consistent, and the writing is clear and easy to follow.
