Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear MR Smith,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to suggest some fruitful steps to improve the service of our reception area.

There are several complained received related to reception area. The main factors I noticed are poor decoration and sitting facility of our reception area. People noticed the lightning of this area is very low, similarly it is very uncomfortable older people to stand for long time.

Every organization consider their reception area as a main priority because the first impression is always vital for the image of any company.

To cope with this issue, we need to establish a different department, which can look closely the pattern of this complained and work on them to improve the service of our reception area. This department can also deal with the online reviews and manage the proper maintenance of every section.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope these suggestion will help to improve the service of reception area.

Your sincerely,

Simranjeet Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to 'establish a different department' is a bit vague and perhaps impractical for a reception area issue. To reach a higher band, try to provide more specific, actionable suggestions, such as installing better lighting or adding comfortable seating. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'To cope with this issue' and 'Similarly' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used, but the transition between the description of the problem and the proposed solution could be smoother. Ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single clear idea to improve the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'fruitful steps', 'vital', and 'maintenance'. There are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'several complained received' (should be 'complaints received') and 'sitting facility' (should be 'seating facilities'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit your score. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you are using the correct word forms (e.g., nouns vs. verbs).

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Every organization consider' (should be 'considers'), 'lightning' (should be 'lighting'), and 'it is very uncomfortable older people' (should be 'it is very uncomfortable for older people'). Punctuation is generally fine, but there are minor errors in article usage and subject-verb agreement. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences will help you move into the higher bands.
