Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to suggest some ideas for enhancement of reception place for visitors as we have received numerous complaints from tourist.

Since last seven days, most of the visitors made complaints about inadequate reception service. They informed us that receptional employees were always busy with their smartphone. They faced myriad of issues because of poor payment system even though they faced enormous queue at reception area due to unexperienced workers.

Reception area plays a pivotal role for us business. If any guest obtained professional service at that area, they definitly enjoy their visit at our hotel. Apart from this, they recommended our hotel to other individauls.

There are various things need to improved at reception area such as we require fast payment system and professional employees could handle huge queue effortlessly, so it is extremely crucial to appoint experienced personel for reception area.

My suggestion might assist us to enhance our productivity at reception place.

Your faithfully,

Piyush

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention 'inadequate reception service' and 'poor payment system', these points could be expanded with more specific detail to fully satisfy the requirements of a higher band. The response is clear and the purpose of the letter is established immediately, which helps in achieving the task requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'such as', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the complaints and the importance of the reception area is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'pivotal', 'enhancement', and 'myriad'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'receptional employees' (should be 'reception staff'), 'tourist' (should be 'tourists'), and 'personel' (spelling error: 'personnel'). Additionally, 'reception place' is used repeatedly; varying this with synonyms like 'front desk' or 'reception area' would improve your score. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'Since last seven days' (should be 'For the last seven days'), 'there are various things need to improved' (should be 'there are various things that need to be improved'), and 'Your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help you improve your accuracy.
