Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to address the major concerns from the feedback and the complaints related to our reception area with some quick and easy solutions to begin with.
I was amazed by the comments as eight out of ten comments were on the approach by our reception team. Second major issues are the lack of directional signs towards the rest of the building areas. Lastly, accessibility restrictions for people with special needs.
First impressions last, and I apologize to mention but we failed to fulfill that towards our guests. Not only this area provides with a guidance and a connection with person of their interest, it shows how organized we are as a company. The reception area is first point of contact and the place which decides if we meet the visitor's expectations based on the company's reputation.
Therefor, I believe we should start with training our reception team. In addition to that, an architect should be consulted to make a design of company map to locate the areas on map to be followed signs for clear directions. Lastly, if we can afford, we should have at least two employees available at all times to take care of people with special needs during their visit.
Please let me know what you think of these. I am open to suggestions if any.
Regards,
Jay Suthar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly identified the complaints, explained the importance of the reception area, and provided actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of why the reception area serves as the 'first point of contact.' To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening statement is more concise and that you avoid slightly informal phrasing like 'quick and easy solutions to begin with.' Overall, the response is purposeful and fully satisfies the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that,' 'Lastly,' and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accessibility restrictions,' 'reputation,' and 'consulted.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'apologize to mention' (which should be 'apologize for mentioning') and 'followed signs' (which is slightly awkward). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To achieve a higher score, aim to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items that sound more natural in a professional business context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Second major issues are' (should be 'The second major issue is'), 'provides with a guidance' (should be 'provides guidance'), and 'Therefor' (spelling error). Additionally, 'the place which decides if we meet' is slightly clunky. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve the accuracy of your writing. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would also be beneficial.
