Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to you regarding the necessary improvements required in the reception area that would help to maintain the standard of our company.
There are several clients who made the complains about the reception area. Firstly, there is a need of receptionist to deal with visitors because when anyone enters in our company there is nobody to greet them. Secondly, there should be separate siting area for visitors so that they can wait at their own comfort. Lastly, some snacks and coffee machine near the siting area will make the look of reception area quite better.
Reception is the only area which shows the standard of your company. Moreover, it looks far more professional and attractive for every client.
The reception could be improved by taking actions on each and every complaint because you will know what clients want it to be to raise the level of the company.
I hope my suggestion would help you to improve the reception area.
Yours Sincerely,
Parminder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to add snacks and a coffee machine is a good start, but it could be more effectively linked to the overall goal of improving the visitor experience. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a manager, although the phrasing in the final paragraph is a bit repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that your suggestions are more detailed and clearly connected to the specific complaints mentioned earlier in the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Lastly', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined. For example, the transition between the description of the complaints and the importance of the reception area is abrupt. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that your ideas transition more smoothly will help improve the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'reception area', 'professional', and 'standard of our company'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'made the complains' (should be 'made complaints') and 'siting area' (should be 'seating area'). To improve, try to incorporate a wider range of vocabulary related to business environments and professional communication. Using more precise adjectives and verbs will help you convey your points with greater impact and sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'there is a need of receptionist' (should be 'a need for a receptionist'), 'enters in our company' (should be 'enters our company'), and 'make the look of reception area quite better' (should be 'improve the appearance of the reception area'). These errors do not significantly impede communication, but they do occur frequently. Focusing on articles, prepositions, and correct verb forms will help you achieve greater accuracy in your writing.
