Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Chris,

I am writing this you to suggest some points which might be useful to improved the reception area as there have been numerous complaints of that area from visitors.

Firstly, there are several complaints registered for asking unnecessary information from visitors such as, their banking details, workplace information and stuff they are carrying which is quite uncomfortable for them to answer. Secondly, waiting area where individuals have to wait before check in. They complained about the tore furniture. Thirdly, they are not satisfied with the reception area staff because of their negative attitude.

I believe that make reception area comfortable is very significant to show our company more reputed. It is the area where visitor's first impression happens and it would be tremendous for them. So, they will always remember our hotel and suggest others for staying.

I might think that we can change the fill-in form for visitors by removing unnecessary questions. Moreover, we can install new screens and chairs for the waiting area to make our guest comfortable. To add in, we could send our reception staff for leisure training to do their job better.

I would be grateful if my suggestion would help to improved the reception area.

Yours truly,

Kajal Sharma.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, some ideas could be more fully developed. For instance, while you mention 'negative attitude' as a complaint, you could have briefly explained how this impacts the company's reputation. The structure is clear, and the purpose of the letter is evident from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that your suggestions are linked more explicitly to the specific complaints mentioned earlier.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'that area' which could be more precisely defined. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create smoother transitions between your ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reputed', 'unnecessary information', and 'tremendous'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'tore furniture' (should be 'torn') and 'leisure training' (likely meant 'customer service training'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that your word forms are accurate in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I am writing this you to suggest' (missing 'to'), 'might be useful to improved' (should be 'improve'), and 'make reception area comfortable is very significant' (should be 'making the reception area comfortable'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your message. To improve, pay closer attention to verb forms after infinitives and ensure consistent subject-verb agreement.
