Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope this message finds you well.
I am writing this email to request an up-gradation in the reception area to address the complaint provided by the customer.
Unfortunately, our reception is extreme unhygienic making it uncomfortable to sit for both staff as well as customer and some lights are broken which are hanging on top of the wall that looks very odd and unprofessional. Furthermore, during rush hours there are no proper boundaries that create chaos among people.
As a receptionist, it is very important to make our area clean so that whenever customer make a visit will give them a long lasting impression and eventually bring more customers to a company thus increase the profit of the organization.
I would appreciate it if you could dedicated housekeeper to clean the reception timely and hire light technician to fix the broken lights and make the thing visible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to 'hire light technician' is brief, and the explanation of why the reception is important could be more sophisticated. While the task is fully addressed, the ideas are presented in a fairly straightforward manner without significant extension or depth. The response meets the requirements of the prompt effectively, but it lacks the level of detail that would elevate it to a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'As a receptionist' are used to link ideas, though the flow is occasionally mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, you could use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between the description of the problems and the proposed solutions is smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'unhygienic', 'unprofessional', and 'long lasting impression'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'up-gradation' is not standard in this context (improvement is better), 'extreme unhygienic' should be 'extremely unhygienic', and 'make the thing visible' is vague. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary and better control over word forms to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the complaint provided by the customer' (should be plural 'complaints'), 'hanging on top of the wall' (awkward phrasing), and 'whenever customer make a visit' (missing article and subject-verb agreement). Additionally, 'could dedicated housekeeper' is missing the verb 'be'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately.
