Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to you to suggest you some improvements for reception area as requested because we are receiving a lot of complaints regarding the area used for reception.
Most of the visitors have submitted complaints regarding cleanliness of the area, and less staff available on reception for people help. According to people, dirty desks, chairs, and floor are making difficult for people to spend time there. Also, not enough number of staff is making people frustrated who came for their work at reception.
Reception area plays a key role in functioning of any type of company and organisations. Any type of query and work is started, completed and fast-tracked at reception. So for our company, improving our reception area could result in better sales and better image in society.
There are several ways in which our reception area could be improved. For cleanliness, our company can hire cleaning company which can make daily visit to our reception area for cleaning. Also, we can hire more staff in reception area to fast track reception work.
Kind regards,
Gurpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the nature of the complaints regarding cleanliness and staffing, explain the importance of the reception area for company image and operations, and provide actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the impact of these improvements, such as how they might specifically enhance visitor experience or employee productivity, rather than just stating they would result in 'better sales'. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear and logical development of ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Also' and 'So', to link sentences. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and basic. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') to create a more sophisticated flow between ideas. The paragraphing is effective, and the letter follows a standard professional structure, which aids the reader in navigating the content.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'functioning', 'fast-tracked', and 'frustrated'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'less staff available on reception for people help' (should be 'fewer staff' and 'to assist visitors') and 'not enough number of staff' (should be 'insufficient staffing'). While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the precision of your writing. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more natural collocations and precise terminology relevant to a professional business context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is consistently clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the reception area', 'a cleaning company') and awkward phrasing ('making difficult for people to spend time there'). There are also minor errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and ensure that complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy. Despite these errors, the writing remains easy to understand, and the errors do not significantly interfere with the overall message.
