Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter to provide suggestions regarding improvement of reception area.
Firstly, we are getting plethora of complaints regarding reception and addressing them can be a viable solution. As we only have one receptionist, many people complaint that they have to wait in a long queue. Additionally, due to slow internet services even a small online confirmation requires them to wait. Some people also complaint about lack of sitting arrangements for those who are waiting for their turn.
It is obvious that reception is the an essential area of company. Visitors get first impression of the company from the reception. On top of that, reception staff can provide one-on-one assistance for different concerns of the visitors.
I would recommend you to take an appropriate actions to improvise current issues with the reception area. You can start with upgrading internet services and at least allocate two staff member to look after reception duties. Moreover, expansion of reception area to provide sitting arrangements and adding a bookshelf there can help the visitors to engage themselves in reading while they are waiting.
Hoping for a careful consideration of my suggestions.
Yours faithfully,
Mansi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief; for instance, the explanation of why the reception is important could be expanded with more specific detail regarding company reputation. Despite this, the task is fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning to the end.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'On top of that', and 'Moreover' are used to guide the reader through the arguments. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You have used some good collocations like 'viable solution' and 'first impression'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'plethora of complaints' (which is slightly too informal or hyperbolic for this context) and 'improvise current issues' (where 'resolve' or 'address' would be more accurate). The range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but a wider variety of precise, topic-specific vocabulary would be needed to reach a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('at reception area', 'the an essential area') and subject-verb agreement issues ('many people complaint' instead of 'complain'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. You have attempted some complex structures, but the control is inconsistent. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring that verbs are correctly conjugated, especially when discussing plural subjects or past events.
