Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 8.0)
I am writing to suggest some improvements to the reception area following several complaints from visitors.
Recently, a number of visitors have commented that the reception area is too small and often becomes crowded, particularly during busy periods. They have also complained about the lack of comfortable seating and the long waiting times. In addition, some visitors have found it difficult to locate the reception desk because there is insufficient signage.
The reception area is particularly important because it is the first part of the company that visitors encounter. A clean, welcoming and well-organised reception area creates a positive first impression and reflects the professionalism of the organisation. It also helps visitors feel comfortable and ensures that they can easily find the assistance they need.
I would therefore recommend reorganising the existing space to provide more seating and a clearer waiting area. Installing a prominent reception sign and directional signs would also make it easier for visitors to find their way around. Furthermore, a simple visitor-management system could be introduced to reduce waiting times. Finally, improving the lighting and adding some plants or other tasteful decorations could make the area more welcoming.
I hope these suggestions will be considered, as I believe they would significantly improve visitors' experience of our company.
Yours Sincerely,
Tisha Bhatt

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly describe the complaints regarding space, seating, and signage. You effectively explain the importance of the reception area as the 'first point of contact' and provide logical, actionable suggestions for improvement, such as a visitor-management system and better signage. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, meeting all the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the structure easy to follow. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'It also', 'I would therefore', and 'Furthermore', to link your points smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the description of complaints, the importance of the area, and the proposed solutions. The flow of information is natural and professional throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context. Phrases like 'insufficient signage', 'prominent reception sign', and 'visitor-management system' show a strong command of topic-specific language. The vocabulary is precise and used accurately to convey your meaning. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic professional expressions could elevate the response further. Overall, the lexical control is consistent and supports the clarity of your message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The writing displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, such as the use of relative clauses ('...that visitors encounter') and conditional-like structures ('...if...'). Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement is excellent. The writing is polished and demonstrates a strong grasp of English grammar.
