Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to suggest some improvements to the reception area, as we have received several complaints from visitors and clients.
Let me explain you the situation, A number of visitors have raised several complaints about reception being over-crowded, no proper signage for the location such as washrooms, elevator etc. There is also a lack of seating. In addition, area is very untidy during busy periods, with outdated magazines and paperworks left on the table.
The reception area is particularly important because it's the first point of contact. As a result, firstly we have to create a welcoming and well-organised reception area which helps to make a positive first impression on clients and visitors.
I would suggest several relatively simple improvements. First, additional seating could be provided, along with a clear signage of different places. Secondly, we can decorate the reception area with the history of the country and hotel and create a more welcoming atmosphere. Finally, we can assign a permanent member of staff to check the reception regularly and maintain the hygine.
I believe these changes would significantly improve visitors experience without requiring a major investment.
Yours sincerley,
Anuj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the complaints regarding overcrowding, signage, and cleanliness. You explain the importance of the reception area as the 'first point of contact' and provide actionable suggestions for improvement, such as adding seating and assigning a staff member for maintenance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are balanced; for instance, the explanation of why the area is important could be slightly more detailed to fully explore the impact on company reputation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a concluding sentence. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'As a result', 'Firstly', and 'Secondly' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated. For example, the sentence 'Let me explain you the situation' is slightly awkward and could be replaced with a more natural transition like 'I would like to outline the current issues.' Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'over-crowded', 'signage', 'outdated', and 'maintain the hygiene'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'Let me explain you the situation' (should be 'explain the situation to you') and 'paperworks' (paperwork is an uncountable noun). Additionally, there is a spelling error in the closing ('sincerley'). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and appropriately for a professional context. To improve, focus on using uncountable nouns correctly and refining collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show control over basic grammar, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'no proper signage' (which lacks a verb) and 'the history of the country and hotel' (which lacks articles or specific context). Punctuation is generally good, though there is a missing space after the comma in 'situation, A number'. While you attempt complex sentences, some are slightly clunky. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement will help you achieve a higher score.
