Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear manager,

I am writing in response to your request for suggestions on how the reception area could be improved. There are various kind of complaints I received pertaining to reception area. The first and foremost issue is, there is a poor signage hence visitors have face problem where to go. Addition to this, waiting area is not fully organized so that guests are uncomfortable and dissatishfy with that arrangements. owing to getting croweded in busy hours guests have to long wait in queues which cause frustration.

Welcoming area, it is the first place that creates organizations first impression. Having poor signage, guests are preplexed to locate specific area. There is a lack of chairs and couches clients having issue in discussing their plan about their project. A welcoming area can make visitors feel comfortable and respected.

In order to improve the reception area, add more chair and comfortable chairs, old furniture should be replaced by modern ones as well. Create a separate waiting area, and improve lighting and decoration area. Apart from this, Introduce a visitor sign-in system to reduce waiting times.

I believe these changes would create a more welcoming and professional environment for visitors and improve the company's image.

Thank you

Warm regards,

Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why the area is important is a bit repetitive, and the suggestions could be more detailed to show a deeper engagement with the task. While the purpose is clear throughout, the response would benefit from more sophisticated expansion of the points provided to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the problems to the solutions. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Addition to this' and 'Apart from this'. Additionally, some sentences lack smooth transitions, making the flow feel a bit disjointed in places. Improving the variety and naturalness of linking words would enhance the overall coherence of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'perplexed' and 'pertaining to', which is positive. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'various kind of complaints', 'dissatishfy' (spelling error), and 'getting croweded'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the writing. Expanding the range of collocations and ensuring accurate word forms would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the reception area', 'a poor signage'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence construction (e.g., 'there is a poor signage hence visitors have face problem'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing commas. While the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to indicate a lack of full control over complex structures.
