Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Manager,

I am writing in response to your request for suggestions on how the reception area could be improved. There are various kinds of complaints I received pertaining to reception area. The first and foremost issue is, there is a poor signage hence visitors have to face problem knowing. In Addition to this, the waiting area is not fully organized so that guests are uncomfortable and dissatisfied with that arrangements. Owing to croweds in busy hours guests have to wait for long hours in queues which cause frustration.

Welcoming area, it is the first place that creates organization's first impression. Having poor signage, guests are perplexed to locate a specific area. There is a lack of chairs and couches clients having issue in discussing their plan about their project. A welcoming area can make visitors feel comfortable and respected.

In order to improve the reception area, add more and comfortable chairs, old furniture should be replaced by modern ones as well. Create a separate waiting area, and improve lighting and decor area. Apart from this, Introduce a visitor sign-in system to reduce waiting times.

I believe these changes would create a more welcoming and professional environment for visitors and improve the company's image.

Thank you

Warm regards,

Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While you list several complaints, the explanation of why the area is important is slightly repetitive, focusing again on signage and furniture rather than broader business impacts. To reach a higher band, ensure each point is fully extended with clear, distinct supporting details. Overall, the response is relevant and covers the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'Owing to', and 'In order to', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as the start of the second paragraph ('Welcoming area, it is...'). Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing and sentence flow, such as the phrase 'knowing' which lacks an object, making the connection between ideas slightly unclear. Improving the variety and naturalness of your linking phrases would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'perplexed', 'dissatisfied', and 'professional environment'. There are some instances of awkward phrasing or word choice, such as 'pertaining to reception area' (missing an article) and 'croweds' (spelling error). Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'discussing their plan about their project'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, you should focus on more precise word choices and correct article usage to move into a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'there is a poor signage' (incorrect article usage), 'guests have to face problem knowing' (incomplete verb phrase), and 'clients having issue' (missing auxiliary verb). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and comma splices. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, consistent use of articles, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with grammatical precision.
