Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing in response to your request for suggestions on how the reception area could be improved. There are various kinds of complaints I have received pertaining to the reception area. The first and foremost issue is , there is poor signage hence visitors have to face difficulty knowing. In addition to this, the waiting area is not fully organized so that guests are uncomfortable and dissatisfied with that arrangements. Owing to crowds in busy hours guests have to wait for long hours in queues which causes frustration.
Welcoming area, it is the first place that creates organization's first impression. Having poor signage, guests are perplexed to locate a specific area. There is lack of chairs and couches clients having issue in discussing their plan about their project. A welcoming area can make visitors feel comfortable and respected.
In order to improve the reception area, add more and comfortable chairs, old furniture should be replaced by modern ones as well. Create a separate waiting area, and improve lighting and decor area. Apart from this, introduce a visitor sign-in system to reduce waiting times.
I believe these changes would create a more welcoming and professional environment for visitors and improve the company's image.
Thank you
Warm regards,
Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the complaints regarding signage and organization, explained the importance of the reception as a 'first impression' area, and provided actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for example, when mentioning the 'visitor sign-in system', you could briefly explain how it would specifically alleviate the frustration caused by long queues. Overall, the response is clear and relevant to the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'Owing to', and 'Apart from this' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraph could be improved by using a clearer linking phrase to signal the shift from identifying problems to proposing solutions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'perplexed', 'dissatisfied', and 'professional environment'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'clients having issue in discussing their plan' (should be 'clients have difficulty discussing their projects') and 'decor area' (which is slightly redundant). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. Incorporating more precise collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'there is poor signage hence visitors have to face difficulty knowing' (missing object for 'knowing') and 'old furniture should be replaced by modern ones' (the pronoun 'ones' is unnecessary here). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are some awkward phrasings that interrupt the flow. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater precision to minimize these minor errors.
