Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing in response to your request for suggestions on how the reception area could be improved. There are various kinds of complaints I received pertaining to reception area. The first and foremost issue is there is a poor signage; hence visitors have to face problem knowing. In Addition to this, the waiting area is not fully organized so that guests are uncomfortable and dissatisfied with those arrangements. Owing to crowds during busy hours guests have to wait for long hours in queues which cause frustration.
The reception, it is the first place that creates the organization's first impression. Due to poor signage, guests are perplexed finding a specific area. There is a lack of chairs and couches clients having issues in discussing their plan about their project. A welcoming area can make visitors feel comfortable and respected.
In order to improve the reception area, add more and comfortable chairs; old furniture should be replaced by modern ones as well. Create a separate waiting area, and improve lighting and decor. Apart from this, Introduce a visitor sign-in system to reduce waiting times.
I believe these changes would create a more welcoming and professional environment for visitors and improve the company's image.
Thank you
Warm regards,
Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You identified the complaints regarding signage and organization, explained the importance of the reception as a 'first impression' area, and provided actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for instance, you could have elaborated slightly more on how the visitor sign-in system would specifically alleviate the frustration caused by long queues. Overall, the response is clear, relevant, and fulfills the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'Owing to', and 'In order to', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For example, the start of the second paragraph, 'The reception, it is the first place...', is a bit clunky and could be smoothed out for better flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem, the importance, and the solutions, which aids the overall readability of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'perplexed', 'dissatisfied', and 'professional environment'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'there is a poor signage' (should be 'there is poor signage') and 'clients having issues in discussing their plan' (which is slightly vague). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding minor grammatical errors that affect the naturalness of your word choices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips throughout the text. Examples include 'there is a poor signage' (article error), 'visitors have to face problem knowing' (missing object/clarity), and 'clients having issues' (fragmented structure). You also have some punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in 'The reception, it is the first place'. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences and refining your control over complex structures will help you achieve a higher band score in this criterion.
