Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir/ Madam,

I am writing to inform you that from several days we have receiving complaints from visitors for reception area like the reception room is no enough to hold more than three customers at a particular time. Moreover, just right to front desk there is a washroom which does not appear professional as people feel inconvenient to use washroom in that location.

According to my perspective reception are is the front face of any organization by which a person can judge how the company is. Furthermore, the receptionist should be pollute and ready to help customers and have a smile on their face . By this a visitor feel welcoming and honoured.

In my opinion several steps should be taken to enhance the front desk area. Firstly interior must be in pastel colours. Secondly there should be a cafe for people next to the reception desk near the waiting area so that people can grape a cup of tea in there while waiting. We can also organise a book shelf where we can put magazines, novels and fiction books if someone want to ready.

Thank you,

Your faithfully,

KAJAL

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to add a cafe and bookshelf is a bit brief and could have been expanded with more detail on how these would specifically solve the space or professionalism issues mentioned. The letter covers the requirements sufficiently to meet the criteria for a Band 6, as all parts are addressed, though some areas could be more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on one of the required bullet points. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'According to my perspective', 'Furthermore', and 'Firstly' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'By this a visitor feel welcoming'. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved to sound more natural. The overall structure is coherent and follows the standard format for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, though there are several instances of word-choice errors and non-standard collocations. For example, 'pollute' is used instead of 'polite', 'grape' instead of 'grab', and 'ready' instead of 'read'. These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. There is an attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary like 'enhance' and 'professional', but the range is limited. To reach a higher band, you should focus on accurate word choice and avoiding spelling errors that change the meaning of the word.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'we have receiving' (should be 'we have been receiving'), 'no enough' (should be 'not enough'), and 'a visitor feel' (should be 'a visitor feels'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. While these errors are frequent, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, you should proofread for basic verb tense consistency and ensure that subject-verb agreement is maintained in all sentences.
