Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/ Madam,
I am writing this letter to bring into your attention regarding several complaints about the reception area where visitors to your company arrive. And it has been asked by the manager to give some suggestions that how the reception area could be improved.
The majority of complaints we have received about the reception area is about sitting management. The chairs are not comfortable to sit and the seat covers are torn off.
As reception area is an important part of the office because everyone is welcomed over there first and then asked to have a seat due to the waiting times for the appointments.
I could suggest you to improve the area by replacing chair covers and introducing coffee machine for our customers. And we should add some paintings to the wall also. This will make huge difference in the area.
I hope you will like my advice. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours Faithfully,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of these points is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of why the area is important is brief and could be expanded to include the impact on company reputation. The suggestions are relevant but lack detail; for example, explaining how a coffee machine or specific paintings would enhance the visitor experience would have provided a more thorough response. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, though the opening sentence is slightly awkward in its phrasing.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. There is a logical flow from the purpose of the letter to the specific issues and then to the proposed solutions. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences are often simple, such as starting sentences with 'And' or 'The'. To improve, you should use a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') to create a smoother, more professional flow between your ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on common, everyday language, such as 'sitting management' (which is not a standard collocation) and 'make huge difference'. While the meaning is clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there are some inaccuracies in word choice. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to office environments and professional communication. For example, instead of 'sitting management', 'seating arrangements' would be more accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'bring into your attention' should be 'bring to your attention', and 'it has been asked by the manager' is passive and slightly unnatural compared to 'my manager has asked me'. Additionally, there are minor errors in article usage and preposition choice. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more natural sentence construction will improve your accuracy.
