Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Joey,
I am writing in response to your letter asking for the suggestion regarding the reception area in our company.
Recently, many visitors have raised an issue regarding the cleanliness. Specifically, the carpet is spoiled out with mud, and also the doors are jammed due to continuous water logging near the entrance.
Regarding the importance of the reception area, when the visitor arrives, the cleanliness of the entrance will reflect an image of our company into their mind. Also, we have meeting with the board members in the upcoming week. Hence, the area should be well maintained all the time.
I would like to suggest that we should hire a new agency for cleaning purposes instead of our local hired staff. As a result, the agency have enough equipment and well-trained staff that can clean the area smoothly.
I hope you will consider my suggestions and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Anshu Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the complaints regarding cleanliness and water logging, explain the importance of the reception area in terms of company image, and provide a concrete suggestion to hire a new cleaning agency. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how the current staff's lack of equipment specifically impacts the daily operations beyond just the cleanliness aspect. Overall, the task is fully completed with a clear purpose.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a professional closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Specifically', 'Regarding', and 'As a result' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the importance of the reception area and the upcoming board meeting could be more seamless. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall progression of the letter is easy to follow for the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'water logging', 'well maintained', and 'cleanliness'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'spoiled out with mud' is not a standard expression; 'stained with mud' or 'covered in mud' would be more natural. Similarly, 'local hired staff' is slightly awkward; 'in-house staff' or 'existing cleaning staff' would be more professional. Expanding your range of collocations and using more precise terminology would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'the agency have enough equipment' (subject-verb agreement error: 'the agency has') and 'asking for the suggestion' (should be 'asking for suggestions'). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that articles are used correctly. Most of your sentences are error-free, which demonstrates a good level of control over basic and intermediate structures.
