Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to suggest some improvements to our reception area, as several visitors have recently complained about its condition.
The main complaint is that there are not enough seats, especially during busy hours. Some visitors have also mentioned that the area looks old and is not very welcoming. In addition, there are no clear signs to guide visitors to different departments, which sometimes causes confusion.
I believe the reception area is extremely important because it is the first place visitors see when they enter our company. A clean, comfortable and well-organised reception area can create a positive first impression and make visitors feel welcome.
I would suggest adding more comfortable chairs and replacing some of the old furniture. It would also be helpful to put up clear signs showing the location of different departments. Finally, adding a few plants and improving the lighting could make the area more pleasant and professional.
I hope you will consider these suggestions, as I believe they would greatly improve the experience of our visitors.
Yours sincerely,
Sandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the complaints regarding seating and aesthetics, explain the importance of the reception area as a 'first impression' for visitors, and provide logical, actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and the letter follows a logical structure that covers all aspects of the task requirements effectively. No parts of the prompt were omitted, and the content is entirely relevant to the scenario provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph has a central focus, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'I believe', and 'Finally' to link your ideas smoothly. The progression of information is logical, moving from the problem to the justification and finally to the proposed solutions. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points of the letter, making the text easy to follow. The flow of ideas is natural and professional throughout the entire response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context. Phrases such as 'well-organised', 'positive first impression', and 'professional' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it remains somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to describe the situation, such as 'outdated furniture' instead of 'old furniture' or 'enhance the aesthetic appeal' instead of 'make the area more pleasant'. However, the current range is sufficient and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The response is highly accurate with no significant grammatical errors. You use a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences like 'I am writing to suggest some improvements..., as several visitors have recently complained...' and 'A clean, comfortable and well-organised reception area can create a positive first impression...'. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and the verb tenses are consistent and appropriate for the context. The writing is error-free, showing a high level of control over English grammar. The majority of sentences are complex and error-free, which is characteristic of a high-level performance.
